Who are you?
Hello, I’m Lizzie Monument. I started CrossFit four days after my plane landed from the UK, 17 months ago. I remember getting tangled up in a pretzel stretch after the first session, and Emily standing over me with her hands on her hips, asking me what on earth I was trying to do (love you, Em).
Why CrossFit?
When I first arrived in Geelong, I hadn’t lifted my left arm above shoulder-height for years. I’d been told never to do a push-up, and to avoid burpees – plus, lifting weights was out of the question. Tom explained that I hadn’t had appropriate physio, and gave me a course of exercises. Six months later, I had full movement back in my left arm for the first time in five years (love you too, Tom).
What is your favourite WOD?
My favourite WODs are 40-minute AMRAPS that I can potter through at my own pace.
Who or What inspires you?
I’m inspired by watching people achieve the things I can’t do yet: chin over bar; a split jerk without falling over; doing box jumps like a showjumper.
Advice for new comers?
- It will never hurt again as much as it did in the first week.
- You can now enjoy pizza without feeling guilty.
- Stick at it – you will get stronger than you ever thought was possible.
